Focusing on the theory of city and industrial agglomeration, thisresearch group is devoted to clarify the structure and the dynamic evolving process of spatial economyincluding city, region, and international trade. We are also interested in the related policy analysis. Forthis purpose, as one of the characteristics of our research group, interdisciplinary approach called ‘regionalscience’ is employed to tackle with the widespread city problems from local conflict to global issues. Themain discipline to be employed includes urban economics, regional economics, international economics,and OR. Some research topics are as follows.1. Spatial economics. We aim to clarify the economic mechanisms of international trade, city formationand industrial agglomeration. We are interested in not only theoretic research but also its applications inmore realistic problems such as regional competition and cooperation.2. Networks and location incentives. We analyze how the network information of supply chain,transportation, geography, etc. is used for local governments to make policies of attracting firms toactivate their economic activities.Economic Mechanisms of City Formation andAgglomeration交通・通信ネットワークによって結ばれた個々の都市は、人・財・サービス・知識の移動を通じて、全体として有機的な「都市システム」を形成している。また、グローバル化、ボーダーレス化の急速な進展のもとで、都市、地域、国際経済は複雑に絡み合い、現代の都市システムは国を越えたグローバルな社会経済システムを形成しつつある。本研究室は、都市や産業の集積形成の理論を中心として、都市、地域、国際貿易などを対象とした空間経済の構造とダイナミックな変遷過程を解明し、都市・地域の経済発展の政策分析を行う。これらの問題に対し、都市経済学、地域経済学、国際経済学、ゲーム理論、OR などの関連する分野を複合的に動員した、「地域科学」と呼ばれる学際的なアプローチにより研究を進める。現在の主なテーマは以下の通りである。1. 空間経済学の理論と応用。数理的なアプローチを用いて国・地域・都市の経済システムにおける様々な経済現象に対して生産における規模の経済・独占競争・輸送費の観点から分析し、国際貿易や、特定の地域への産業集積と都市形成のメカニズムを理論的に解明する。また、政策分析などの現実的な問題にも応用する。2. ネットワークと企業誘致。各地方自治体が企業誘致を行う際、どのような企業・企業グループを誘致することが地域経済の活性化に最も寄与するかを、サプライチェーンなどの企業間取引ネットワークや、交通などの地理的ネットワークの情報を活用して分析する。
