留学した日本人学生から2018 年の8 月に約2 週間ドイツのGottingen で開催されたData Science Summer Schoolに参加しました。指導教員の徳山先生（現関西学院大学教授）から参加を進められ、研究室の先輩も2017 年度のサマースクールに参加しており、興味があったので参加を決めました。サマースクールには日本、ドイツ、アメリカ、スウェーデンなどの国からの参加者がいました。専門分野も情報科学だけでなく、電気工学、生物学、社会科学など、様々なバックグラウンドを持った人たちがいました。授業の内容は統計学やアルゴリズムなどの基礎的なものから、実用的なライブラリやツールの使い方まで多岐に渡り、内容が高度でわからないということはありませんでしたが、結構大変だったと思います。参加者のほとんどは同じホテルに泊まるのですが、ルームメイトとの会話や、毎朝朝食をともにし、登校をするなかで、英語でのコミュニケーションを取ることになり、もっと英語、英会話のトレーニングが必要だと体感しました。このサマースクールでは様々なことを学びましたが、一番良い思い出となったのは、一人で山にハイキングに行ったことです。Gottingen 市には小高い山があり、そこの頂上付近にPlesse 城という城があります。決して大きな城ではないのですが、市民の間では憩いの場となっているようです。はじめの週末の最初のチャレンジでは、誰もいない山道を一人で歩く恐怖と（道を間違えた）、水がなくなってしまった絶望で ( 自動販売機はほぼない)、城までたどり着くことができませんでした。二度目の週末に他の参加者たちがBerlin に遠足に行っているなか、一人でもう一度チャレンジをしました。今度は前回の反省を活かし、はじめにグーグルマップで城までの道を確認し、2 リットルの水を用意しました。まず登山道にたどり着くまでに徒歩で約1 時間半かかり、めんどくさくなってきて帰ろうかとも思いましたが、せっかくなので登ることにしました。そして、誰もいない山道を歩くこと約2 時間、やっと城にたどり着くことができました。頂上付近で気がついたのですが、どうやら僕が登った道はハイキングで使われている道ではなかったようで、グーグルマップも適当なものだと思いました。さて、城につくと疲れているので、レストランで食事をしました。登山の後のビールはとても美味しかったです（ドイツのビールはいつ飲んでも美味しいです）。Plesse 城では、城壁から街を一望できるのですが、ここで、人生で初めて景色を見て感動しました。あのどこまでも大地が繋がっている感じは多分日本では見られないのではないかと思います。もしみなさんもGottingen にいくことがあればPlesse 城へのハイキングをおすすめします。僕はバスが嫌いなので徒歩で行きましたが、バスを使うとGottingen 駅から約1 時間で行くことができます。このドイツでの2 週間の生活はとても思い出に残るものとなりました。The first time I came to Japan was in 2015, when I attendedTohoku University as a student of the Junior Year Programin English (JYPE). At that time, I was in the third year of mybachelor’s degree and looking for universities abroad which Icould study at. Being one of the top universities in Japan, andemphasizing the extent of research activities as part of one’sstudies, Tohoku University immediately stood out. I applied andwas accepted to JYPE. Throughout my time as a JYPE studentI became more interested in Japan and its culture, as well as Tohoku University and its culture of research. By the end of myexchange program, I had decided that I wanted to return for graduate studies.When I was applying to Tohoku University for graduate school, I was excited to hear that there was a new program, the DataSciences Program (DSP), that focused on topics that I was very interested in learning about. Throughout the application processthe DSP staff were very helpful and responsive. I feel lucky to have been accepted as a student of DSP.In addition to the classes that Tohoku University offered before, DSP adds extra classes that are taught in Japanese and English to accommodatemost students. Many of these classes teach some basic component of data science, but in the context of one of the following departments: InformationSciences, Life Sciences, Economics and Management, and Biomedical Engineering. Because of this, I feel that DSP successfully shows the interdisciplinarynature of data science. DSP also offers special project-based learning courses in which students are faced with a problem from industry, and are taskedwith using machine learning to create a solution. Overall, I feel that Tohoku University and DSP provides many quality academic opportunities.I consider Sendai city to be an excellent location as it has many of the benefits of being a large city without feeling too crowded. Sendai and itssurrounding prefectures hold many festivals, and are rich in natural and historical sites, providing many chances for sightseeing. Travelling to and fromSendai is easy, as there are many routes that use bus, train, plane, or ferry.Considering all that I have learned and experienced, as well as the academic and cultural opportunities, studying at Tohoku University is a choice that Iwould make again.浅野 孝平Mike Zielewskiシステム情報科学専攻全研究室 D1Department of Computerand Mathematical SciencesTakizawa Lab M1Interview of Foreign Student私はオーストラリア出身です。でも、この8 年間オーストラリアには住んでいません。オーストラリアの大学を卒業してからは、日本の公立学校で英語の教師として5 年間働きました。その後、ドイツへ留学してまた日本に戻りました。だから仙台市に来たとき、ふるさとに帰ると同じ感覚でした。教師から学生へ。DSPII の入学については国際交流推進室の人にとても助けてもらいました。分からなかったことや仙台市についての質問にすぐに答えてくれました。DSPII のプログラムに少しでも興味あったら、ぜひ国際交流推進室の人に聞いてください。日本は興味深いことが多いので退屈になりません。どんな趣味を持っていても必ずいい時間を過ごすでしょう。特に仙台市みたいな都市で。ここには、自然や夜遊び、食べることや買い物、全部があります。また、どんな研究室に入っても先生や他の学生は優しくて困ったことを手伝ってくれます。情報科学研究科の中には様々なトAlexander Maas ピックを研究している研究室があるので、きっと興味があるトピックを見つけられるでしょう。Department of Human-SocialInformation SciencesInoue Lab M1▲愛媛県内子笹まつり ▲四国お遍路国際交流推進室International Liaison Office74
